Joshua Kelly wins BCU final event for 2018

IN some tricky and difficult conditions Joshua Kelly won the Barbados Cycling Union’s (BCU final race of the 2018 season on Sunday.

Competing on the Bushy Park, 10.1km, St. Phillip road course, Kelly, along with Greg Vanderpool and Jacob Kelly, launched the second of their attacks on the final climb of the day to pull away from the pack.

There were 35 cyclists who made the trip to St. Philip for the event as the rain and gusty winds for the first half of the race made the cyclists work extremely hard on the road.

The intriguing battle in the Elite Category 1 and 2 started on the second of the planned seven laps when Joshua Kelly and Vanderpool broke away from the peloton.

However their biggest margin was 45 seconds over the chasers and they were eventually caught with two laps to go.

A second and final attack came on Thickets Hill by Vanderpool and the Kelly brothers Joshua and Jacob, as they were never caught again.

Joshua Kelly was the eventual winner of category 1 and he was followed to the finish by Vanderpool and Jacob Kelly, Russel Elcock fourth, Kyle Gill finished fifth overall and was first in category 2. Raymond Brathwaite and Malavi Velloza were the winners of category 3 and 4 respectively.

Junior Proverbs and Sedwin Jones dominated the two masters categories. Cheyenne Awaii won the women’s and Adam Marshall the tiny mite categories.

The youngest cyclist was four year old Benjamin McKinney who was joined by his seven year old sister Sophia. They did the one lap race and were accompanied by their mother Krissie, who is a top female cyclist. There was a good turnout of cyclists from the BCU Youth Development Program (YDP), the eventual winner of the male cyclists in this category was Samuel  Lamontagne, second was Matthew Clarke with Jonah Kelly third.

In the female category of the YDP, Sophia McKinney came second and the winner was Brianna Catwell.
