India take charge on day one

NORTH SOUND, Antigua – Indian captain Virat Kohli starred with a sparkling unbeaten 143, punctuated with 16 boundaries, as the visitors rebounded from a slow start to post 302/4 at stumps on the first day of the four-match series against the West Indies at the Sir Vivian Richards stadium in Antigua yesterday.

Murali Vijay was the first to go, the victim of the impressive Shannon Gabriel who was in the midst of a hostile opening burst on a surface which offered decent bounce. Producing a delivery which climbed off a length, the Indian opener was unable to control the lifting delivery which was edged and vice-captain Kraigg Brathwaite, at second slip, snapped up diving in front of first slip. Brathwaite juggled the catch and eventually took it cleanly. Vijay made seven.

The home team was then blunted for the rest of the opening session before leg spinner Devendra Bishoo struck in his first over after lunch, having Cheteshwar Pujara caught off a leading edge at backward point by Brathwaite for 16.

Ajinkya Rahane was next to go pulling a short ball off Bishoo for 22. Then the final wicket was Shikhar Dhawan who was leg before to Bishoo, after he missed a sweep. He made 84, with nine fours and a six.

All rounder Rolston Chase secured his debut in this match.
