Hunte takes RBC Race for the Kids

The usual suspects were the first to cross the line at the 2020 RBC Race for the Kids when it came off this past weekend.

Making a move from its usual home within the environs of the University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus, the fourth edition of the run took a new route which saw it passing through and around Bridgetown.

Moving off from the Chelston Park branch of RBC, local road-running sensation Joshua Hunte blazed a trail to comfortably come back home first. Just about a minute off the pace, Oein Josiah crossed the line to finish second while Micah Stuart was third. Finishing fourth overall and first in the women was Carlie Pipe, and she led Natalie Orr and Kneta Walcott to round out the top-three women.

The course, which ran just over five kilometres, saw several hundred walkers taking on the challenge and Orin Josiah – Oein’s dad – was the first walker back in. Veteran walker Rodney Blackman came in second while Anderson Maughn was third. Charmaine Belgrave led the female walkers home with Sandra Murray and Selena Goodridge coming second and third.

Speaking before the start of the event, Managing Director of RBC Barbados, Robert DaSilva, highlighted its importance and thanked the public for their buy-in to its cause.

“We at RBC truly believe that the Race For the Kids is an important investment that will ultimately contribute to sustainable social and economic improvement in Barbados. At our media launch in January, I challenged everyone to help us increase our number of participants and funds raised by 20% above last year through supporting our race. Whether you are running, walking, volunteering, sponsoring or cheering, by being here this afternoon, you have made your commitment to youth, education and mental health in Barbados,” he said.

With the event coming off on International Women’s Day, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Principal of UWI, Cave Hill, Professor The Most Honourable Eudine Barriteau, said that she was pleased and appreciative of the corporate citizenship of RBC.

“Last year, they provided us with $125 000 in scholarships for our students and to date, that sum is $196 000. This year, RBC has agreed to provide two special scholarships for Bahamian students, recognising how Hurricane Dorian devastated the country and created hardship for students, their parents and the entire society. RBC is providing, from this year’s proceedings, two special scholarships but that is not all. They will continue to support the First Year Experience Programme – a programme that assists students in making the transition from secondary school to university, but more than university – to adulthood,” she said.
