Herman Griffith final set for today

After being shifted twice, it is hoped that all remains well for today’s final of the 2016 Guardian Group Herman Griffith National Sports Council Primary Schools’ Cricket Competition. With proceedings postponed on both occasions due to conditions arising from inclement weather, a cracker-jack final is expected between Bayley’s Primary and West Terrace Primary.

With both teams having titles under their belts in recent years, it is anyone’s call as to who will be taking it home in 2016. Bayley’s last took the championship in 2011 and look good to do so again as they have stayed unbeaten this year after losing last year’s final. Winning all eight of their games, the lads came out of Zone C1 before dismissing Zone D1 giants Eden Lodge in their semi-final.

They will be boasting the talents of Shaquan Belle, Daniel Joseph, Jaden Yarde and Daniel Duncan, who have all performed exceptionally with both bat and ball. Belle, whose highest score was 52, has taken a total of 10 wickets this season for 51 runs in 15 overs, while Joseph has been good for nine from 29 in 14 overs and had 58 on his best day. Daniel Duncan was the best all-rounder in the team, scoring 44 runs in a single game, taking three wickets for 22 runs in six overs, as well as three catches.

West Terrace were in winner’s row more recently, taking the 2014 title from Charles F. Broome. They had a slightly charted path to today’s final, winning six of their games, losing one and having the rains steal an opportunity for a seventh win. Raedon Bellamy and Zion Brathwaite are West Terrace’s go-to men as Bellamy has a total of 13 wickets this year and is responsible for a 50-run haul. Brathwaite, though not as brash with the ball (7 wickets), has a knock of 85 in his records. Other players of special merit in the squad are Brandon Hinds (76 runs), Izaiyah Goodman (60 runs) and Christopher Narine (4 wickets).

Today’s final is scheduled for 10 a.m. at the Empire ground in Bank Hall.
