Football: St. Andrew hold strong at home

A hat-trick from a former national national player was more than enough to take St. Andrew over the line as they soundly defended their turf in their home game of the David Thompson Memorial Constituen-cy Councils Football Classic. With this year’s tournament continuing on Friday night, Jomo Harewood led the charge as St. Andrew humiliated neighbours St. Peter with a four-nil result at Belleplaine.

Showing that he had not lost any shine, Harewood put his team in the lead 15 minutes into the exchange, to be followed by Zeco Greaves in the 31st. After the break, Harewood was in total control as St. Peter failed to make any impact at all. He would go on to score twice more, sealing the deal after goals in the 69th and 76th minutes.

In an earlier game at that venue, another set of neighbours crossed swords but broke even at the end of the affair. St. James Central and St. James North ended with a goal each after Garfield Browne scored for Central in the 12th minute and Jason Blackman netted for North in the 30th.

Over at Parkinson, hosts St. Michael South-East came from behind to get the better of St. Philip South. South-East struck first through Arantees Lawrence in the 12th minute but the St. Philip side had a reply from Akeem Browne inside the very next minute. They were able to double up and take the lead when T’Shane Lorde scored in the 21st minute, but the home team were able to equalise when Lawrence made good on a penalty kick in the 33rd. The teams were locked in a dead heat for most of the second half but national team captain Mario Harte came through with the game winner in the 90th minute.

The first game at Parkinson had a similar outcome as Christ Church South came from two goals down to take a three-two win over St. Michael North-East. Riverre Williams put the St. Michael team stoutly in control before a half-hour was gone with goals in the 27th and 29th minutes, but that would be all his team would muster. Armando Lashley (35th) pulled one back for Christ Church South in the first half while Chris Harris leveled the score in the 73rd. Lashley was able to tip the scales in the 81st when he got a penalty kick in the 81st.
