Fifth set needed to decide volleyball winners

THE Goddard Enterprises Barbados Volleyball Association’s Division One competition saw two thrilling five setters on Wednesday night at the Kensington Oval Bond.

The first one saw Cawmere edging out Foundation United ,while the night cap saw Flow Deacons getting across the line against Chargers.

Playing in the opening game of the double header Cawmere has a boosted attack with Mark Lewis formerly of the Chargers joining the team this season. This gave Cawmere more attacking options with the left-hand Shawn Simpson still making his presence felt.

However, it was Foundation that struck first in a close first set winning 25-23 and sending a wake-up call to Cawmere. In the second set the reply was sent loud and clear with Cawmere run out to a 25-19 set win.

Nonetheless, the next two sets saw the teams trading, Foundation won 25-22 and Cawmere won 25-21, and it went down to the deciding fifth set.

Yet, the fifth set was mostly one-sided as Cawmere grabbed the lead early and never surrendered. There was a slight bobble at the end after leading 14-9, Foundation were seemingly making in-roads in their lead, but Cawmere only needed one point for victory and it was a little too late for Foundation who went down 15-12.

In the other match Deacons and Chargers did not live up to their billing as the match was not as exciting as many had hoped it would be.

However, in the fifth set it was a block by the Deacons front court that gave them the victory in the end winning 20-25, 25-18, 25-22, 15-25, 15-13. (CG)
