Dowrich leads Challengers in losing effort

Tara Dowrich led all scorers with 21 points on the night for the Challengers Sports Club in a losing effort against the UWI Blackbirds. The Challengers went down 28-39 in the last game of the evening at the Barbados Community College in the #1 Beauty Supplies and Beauty Exchange BABA Women’s League.

It was a low scoring game but not for Dowrich as she was excellent from the field, scoring 21 of the teams 28 points in the game while in a 10 of 24 shooting performance. She also had 4 rebounds and was outstanding on the defensive end, harassing the Blackbirds side and copping 8 steals in the process. Only three other players scored the basketball for the Challengers and they were Cheryl Steele who had 3 points but added 8 rebounds and 3 steals in the effort to win. Aisha Holton and Tammy Hope both had 2 points but added 6 and 7 rebounds respectively.

For UWI, the effort was truly by the team. There was no player in double digits for the Blackbirds and each player on the score sheet but two scored the ball. The top scorer for UWI was Tiffany Thorpe with 9 points and she also was stellar on the boards with 18 rebounds while Ashida Hinds added 6 points as well. Keisha Corbin, Tyra Holder, Jamie Lasley and Ashley Rock all scored 4 points for the Blackbirds team. Sade Haynes could only muster 2 points but pulled down 10 rebounds as the UWI side owned the paint in the game. They outrebounded the Challengers by almost 20 rebounds, 56-37.

The two teams will face off again on Sunday to start the second round of the Women’s League. The game will be played at BCC at 8 p.m. Challengers will look to put up more of a fight as they have averaged over 35 points in each of their previous games. UWI will look to get the win and improve their chances of reaching the playoffs to compete for the undefended title since Station Hill Lady Cavs have bowed out of the competition. (AS)
