Dover finally does it!

Last year’s losing finalists Executive Air Dover Chargers have finally won a game in the Barbados Amateur Basketball Association and it came against the Cougars, 56-54, but it almost fell out of their hands.

A last quarter 19-12 run by Cougars at the Station Hill courts saw them erase a nine-point third quarter lead by Chargers to close the lead to two but they just could not take it one step more and take the lead and the win. With the win Chargers got off the mark to win their first game of the season after four attempts. They are still at the bottom of the table but can now hope to ride the momentum and move up in the standings. Chargers’ Leon Gill led all scorers with 21 points while Nik Monnis finished with nine and Jason Bowen and Ryan Lewis put up seven points each.

Cougars have been having a tough season as well and are winless so far for the 2017 campaign. With the loss of Stevenson Callender and Adrian Stuart, they are a shell of the former Premier side which once were competitive in that division. Their main scorer Shawn Gaskin had a quiet game with 13 points on the night and Andrew Gittens and Adrian Catlyn had 12 and 8, respectively. Romar Beckles had a great game to top score for Cougars with 18 points, but it was not enough to give them the win.

In the second game of the night the Pan American International Insurance Corporation Warrens Sports Club Seniors demolished the home team Station Hill Cavaliers. It was going to be a tall task for the Cavs coming up against the undefeated WSC Seniors but at half time the full reality of their matchup was apparent. The score stood at 41-22 with two full quarters left to play and Warrens still had more points left in the tank.

Cavs found some points to put up as well and came out of the break with a new resolve which translated to 19 points in the third. Warrens were still able to outscore them however and stretched the lead to 21, 62-41. It was a deficit which would prove to be insurmountable for the Cavs and they suffered their fourth defeat for the season.

Peter Alleyne top scored in the game with 25 points including 4 treys in a winning effort. He had good support from Pearson Griffith with 17 points while George Farrell finished with 12 and Bernard Riley 8. For the Cavs Romario Hutson and Runako Boyce both had a good game to score 17 points apiece. (AS)
