Corey Weithers wins in first round TKO

It took three minutes in Round 1 for Corey ‘Stokes’ Weithers to win the main event of the Spartan Caribbean Fighting Championship (SCFC) Morphosis at the Sea Rock Dome on Saturday.

Barbados’ Weithers who entered as the favourite of the Mixed Martial Arts fight was competing in the middleweight division rather than his accustomed heavyweight Division after he had cut and toned for the National Bodybuilding and Fitness show less than a week before the fight.

Despite the loss in weight, Weithers said he felt great and there was no apparent loss in power with his strikes which was unfortunate for his opponent Louis Andre Murray from St. Lucia.

Weithers immediately took control of the fight which went to the mat. Weithers controlled his distance so that Murray could not escape and each time he tried to raise up, Weithers pinned him down.

Then with hammer fists and some punches Weithers went to work and Murray tapped out three minutes into the first Round.

Barbados Kevin ‘Venom’ Holder moved his record to 4-0 with a TKO over Trinidad’s Tevin Millington in the heavyweight fight which was the co-main event.

Holder entered the arena in spectacular fashion as there was smoke, flashing lights and a soprano playing one of Rihanna hits.

With a Barbados flag draped over his shoulder, Holder entered to the cheers of his many supporters.

Holder, who is ranked number two in the division, gave up three inches in height to the 6’6” Millington who was making his debut.

However, Millington had a tough job getting down to 205lbs and despite putting his body under such stress in a short duration he gave a good account of himself.

Millington was the first to seemingly get the advantage as he tried to apply a choke hold to Holder.

However, the hand was not in position and Holder allowed him to use up some energy before making his move and reverse to gain top control on the mat.

With 205lbs on top Millington tried to get out but could not as Holder utilized his weight to control his opponent on the ground.

Visibly tired Millington survived the first round.

At the start of the second it was clear that the stand-up fight would have suited Millington better as his punches rocked Holder and sent him stumbling backwards.

But the lack of accuracy allowed Holder to get inside and take the fight to the mat once again and for the majority of the fight Millington was fighting for survival from his back on the canvas.

It was clear that both fighters were tired but Millington looked the worse of the two as he rocked on his stool with his head in his lap during the break between rounds.

Once again at the start of the round, Holder weathered the storm which was a flurry of punches from Millington and once again took the fight to the ground where Millington seemingly ran out of gas to continue and Holder was able to end the fight with a ground and pound in the middle of the third.
