Combined Schools Tridents shock Sonics

IN a shocking turn of events, the Combined Schools Tridents came from behind to hand the St. John’s Sonics their third defeat in a row in the Barbados Amateur Basketball Association First Division competition.

The Clapham courts was the venue of the comeback where the Tridents came from seven points down at the end of the third quarter 34-41 to post a 29-point fourth quarter to take the unexpected win 63-52. Sonics seemed to have things well in hand, outscoring the Tridents in each quarter of the game before the fourth. The Tridents, however, were able to catch a second wind and start a run that would sink the Sonics straight to the bottom of the table.

Johnathan Fowler scored ten of his game-high 23 points in the last quarter while David Walkes scored nine of his 16 in the same period to help their team propel themselves past the opposition. Both teams had not won a game for the season and were vying to see who would be the first to receive a notch in the win column. Unfortunately for Sonics, it was not to be and they fell to the enthusiastic and determined Tridents. Sonics played well till the fourth with Akeem Williams scoring 21 points, Rommel Garnes 12 and Owen Branch eight points.

In the second match of the night, the Bulls took on the Station Hill Cavaliers and dismissed them 54-36, an 18-point smash. Station Hill was outscored in each quarter of the game, seeing the lead grow as the game progressed. Playing against a side with veterans such as Ryan Leacock and a talented player like Andrew Ifill, things were always going to be a little tough for the Cavaliers side. Both Leacock and Ifill contributed 11 points each to the victory while Leroy Elliot and Chris Collymore racked up six points apiece.

The Cavs had a shining light on the court, however, in the form of Romario Hutson. He had a game-high 19 points and was unstoppable in the paint. Runako Boyce also played well for the Cavaliers for seven. The Bulls now reside at .500 with two wins and two losses in the competition, while the Cavs are reeling at five losses and no wins. (AS)
