Combermere picks up Round 4 win in Sobers schools tournament

 

Local cricket powerhouse, Combermere, added another win to their tally thus far when the 2016 edition of the Sir Garfield Sobers International Schools continued on Friday. Forging on in their Zone B campaign, the Waterford lads pulled off a massive victory over Dominica Combined Schools at Church Hill to see themselves as a strong contender for the title this year.
 
The visitors went in to bat first and were restricted to 78 all out in the match that was reduced to 34 overs. Struggling to the total in 23.1 overs, Dominica’s top-scorers were Malakai Xavier (17), Brian Joseph (17) and Melvin Defoe (12). Their batting order was razed by Nicholas Kirton and Ronaldo Callender who had figures of 4-20 and 3-23 respectively. The other innings saw Combermere knocking of the target in 9.4 overs to take an eight-wicket win. Ending on 82/2, Combermere were led by Kirton (42) and Leniko Boucher (22) while Kerwin Dupigny took both wickets for 37 runs.
 
BCL beat out Queen’s Park
Over at Briar Hall, BCL Juniors added another notch, beating out Queen’s Park Cricket Club by two wickets. The visitors batted first and made it to 101 by the time all their wickets were taken. The game was reduced to 27 but all were not necessary as the Juniors had them bowled out in 25.1. Shakeel Turney was deadly with the ball as he picked up four scalps for just 21 runs and he had back up from Marson Burgess (2-11) and Damien Goodman (2-22). Queen’s Park’s best hope came in the form of Daniel Ramsawak (24), Iqwe Craig (18) and Kallis Romain (14). It took BCL up to the last over but they made to the finish line. They scored 105/8 in 26.4 overs with Zidane Yearwood leading the charge with 36 and Renaldo Boyce pitching in 22. Queen’s Park had a solid bowler as well in Cavan Byrne and he picked up 4-28 while Kevis John had 2-11.
 
HLF take big win at Content
Hamilton Lashley Foundation took no prisoners when they faced New Amsterdam School in Content, finishing with a 
70-run victory. This time, the home team were in first and HLF put up a solid 183/4 in 26 overs. Shavon Brooks was good for 55, Tashawn Boyce had an unbeaten 53 and Javon Grosvenor struck 31. In the innings, Chetram Persaud bowled 2-38. In their defence, HLF bowled out the visitors for 113 in 25 overs. Andre Skeete had 4-21, Dario Greaves, 2-26 and Micha Thornhill, 2-33 to keep the runs down. Only Zachary Persaud (40), Sasenarine Sukho (35) and Brandon Corlette (11) would make it to double-figures.
 
Antigua do it big in Round 4
The biggest win on the day went to Antigua Combined Schools as they whipped Eletra Institute by a whopping 145 runs at Dover. In a match that was reduced to 30 overs, Antigua went in and blasted 189/4 in 25 overs led by an unbeaten 68 from Melvin Charles. Tyrone Williams (25), Tariq Benjamin (24) and Hughan Tonge (23*) also did some damage with the bat despite Romario Brathwaite’s 2-38. When Eletra went in to chase, they failed miserably as the order crumbled quickly. Being bowled out for 44 in 16.2 overs with only Deopaul Persaud (17) making it past 10, Eletra folded under the pressure of Tonge who had 5-10, Jadeja Martin (2-4) and Kofi James (2-6).
 
Foundation edge out Queen’s College in Zone A action
When Christ Church Foundation met up with Guyana’s Queen’s College at Wayne Daniel, the former snuck away a two-run win. Foundation were able to make 212/7 in 37 overs with Danyl Husbands (60), Shaquan Carrington (59), Mario Hinds (19), Jermain Davis (18) and Joshua Corbin (11*) all playing a starring role. The visitors’ bowling lineup consisted Anthony Singh (3-41), Carl Kumar (2-28) and Elnathan Sukhnandan (2-40). With the target being revised to 144 off 25 overs, the chasers fell painfully short as they reached 141/5 in the allotted overs. Kumar top-scored with 41 while Navindra Persaud (32), Clarence Baird (17) and Damani Thomas (13) all put in their best effort.
 
SLB fail to take down Fatima
Fatima College took away a 31-run win at James Bryan as they got the better of St. Leonard’s Boys’. One of the shortest games on the day as it was whittled down to 15 overs a side, Fatima batted first and knocked 87 for the loss of six. Andrew Davidson hit 30 and Wendell George (29) was one run behind as Tyrese Marshall (2-16) and Renaldo Griffith (2-21) took the wickets for SLB. Going in after an attainable target, SLB were skittled out for only 56 in 13.1 overs. Tauron Gibson (21) was the only player to make a real impact on the target as George (2-9), Jonathan Ramdanie (2-10), Mikkel Govia (2-12) and Anand Lochan (2-14) picked up scalps left, right and centre.
 
Presentation sack Vishnu Boys by seven wickets
At Wanderers, Presentation College made short work of Vishnu Boys’ Hindu College in a 28-over match. Vishnu Boys were all back in the pavilion after 27 overs as Khalid Hudson (4-26) and Keron Persaud (3-15) did most of of the work in restricting them to 98 runs. Nickolai Sammy (15) and Joey Samuel (11) were the the only players in double-figures. Presentation came back to strike up 99/3 in 23.2 overs, led by an unbeaten 23 from Darius Gopaul. Joel Sutherland (23), Isiah Ali (16) and Persaud (15) also chipped in towards the total. Rickash Boodram (2-21) was the lone bowler to take two wickets.
 
Oakville Academy pick up four-wicket win
When Oakville Academy and French Verandah St. Vincent Community College crossed swords at Windward, the former came out on the favourable end of the exchange. French Verandah were in first and racked up 119-9 in 40 overs. Kody Horne struck 33 alongside Jeremy Haywood’s 20 not-out and 13 from Jeremy Layne. Marcus Nadu (2-13) and Denniel Griffiths (2-35) had the best figures for Oakville. Oakville made it look easy as they rolled to 120/6 in 33.2 overs. Guaranshu Sharma led with 57 not-out and Griffiths was good for 17 while Mikayle Riley added 13. French Verandah’s best bowler was Othneil Lewis (2-23).
 
The competition continues tomorrow with games at Isolation, Friendship, Dover, Content, Foundation Four Square, Briar Hall and Gall Hill.
