City United remain unbeaten in BABA First Division

IN their return to the courts in the Barbados Amateur Basketball Association (BABA) First Division competition, City United Celtics have immediately made an impact in the rank and are now unbeaten with four wins at the top of the Aimey and Shepherd Zone.

Their most recent conquest was against the Carrington’s Construction Challengers Sports Club where they dismantled the defence to win by a whopping 31 points. The 85-54 victory is the fourth straight game where the team has scored 80 points or more against their opposition. In truth it is not surprising with veteran players such as Adrian Stuart, Stevenson Callender and Sydney ‘Bouncer’ Rowe in the mix. It can be said that a team that is good on paper does not necessarily translate to a good team on the court, but this is not the case.

Against Challengers, it was a team effort with the top scorer on the team Stuart finishing with 16 points. Shawn Henry scored 14 while Anderson Holder and Callender scored 11 and eight points respectively. At half-time, the lead was already stretched 41-29 and United kept putting up points. Both in the third and the fourth quarters, Celtics scored 20 points or more and Challengers had no answer but to try and score themselves. It was a good effort on their part, but with only Antoine Harewood really making a difference to the score, defeat was inevitable. Harewood was good for a game-high 20 points while Alex Clarke had 17.

Celtics are at the top of the table and will face off against the home team Royals Sports Club in Gully Hill on Wednesday at 8 p.m. Royals only have one win, but have also played the least games for the season. Challengers will have home court advantage when they play ACS United at the Culloden venue at 6:30 p.m., also on Wednesday. (AS)
