Can ACS United win before Station Hill Cavaliers?

ACS United and the Station Hill Cavaliers are in a battle to see who will be the first to win a game in their respective zones in the Barbados Amateur Basketball Association’s First Division competition.

ACS United are at the bottom of the Southern Zone and Station Hill are last in the Northern Zone with 0 wins and 6 losses. United have played most of the weaker teams thus far in the Southern Zone and have been unable to come out with the win. Pinelands and Roberts Royals are the last two teams, which are on the weaker end of the spectrum, left to play United. For Station Hill, they are yet to face Checker Hall Braves, who are one place above with 2 wins and 4 losses.

The question is, can ACS United find a way past Royals, who are their next opponent and the weakest one left for the season? Royals have 1 win and 5 losses and average 48 points a game. United average 45 points a game with their third and fourth quarters being their problem quarters. United does have one thing in their favour and that is youth. The Royals are a veteran team, but older in age, looking to have fun on the court while United is a relatively new team, looking to work its way through the ranks. If United can keep the pace up during the game, the possibility is there that they can outrun and outscore the slower Royals side. The major disadvantage is that Royals, despite their age, are a much disciplined side with a good half-court game. If the pace of the game is slowed down, United stand the chance of losing one of their last chances to win a game this season.

For Station Hill, it is an uphill task as they have lost their match-ups so far for the season by an average of 35 points. The youth squad, which is being built from the ground up by Station Hill Coach Adrian Craigwell, had one good game for the season against the Barbados Youth. Unfortunately, the Barbados Youth had one win for the season and it was against Station Hill, so the chances of defeating any other side in the zone is slim. However, basketball is played on the day and as the season progresses, Station Hill will continue to improve and may pull off an upset.

United remains favoured to win their first game before Station Hill, but the two teams have both improved throughout the season. The battle at the bottom will not matter to many, but the pride that stems from winning at least one game this season would go a long way for the two teams. (AS)
