Blackbirds, Ellerton to cross swords in bottom of barrel brawl

THE University of the West Indies Blackbirds and Ellerton will get a chance tonight to take some pressure off themselves as the weekend gets off to an early start in the Coca Cola Premier League. With one game slated for the Wildey Turf, the two teams at the bottom of the table have an opportunity to better their standing in the early stages of the competition.

Set to face each other at 7 p.m., both teams have a hefty task ahead of them as they sit at the bottom of the barrel. With most other teams having played four games, Ellerton are second from the bottom in 11th place with two points from two draws in three games. The Blackbirds are even worse off with a single point from a draw in two games.

To their credit, both teams have proven themselves as extremely competitive in the past few years with Ellerton getting increasingly stronger in recent times and UWI making their mark in the competition and finishing top five almost every year since their debut.

The aim for these two now is to get themselves into the running as all three of the teams that joined the fold this year are all above them on the ladder. Silver Sands and Wotton lay just ahead on three points each in ninth and tenth positions, while Deacons are a bit higher up on four points in seventh.

The rest of the table reads Weymouth Wales and Paradise in first and second on 10 points, Notre Dame third on seven and the Barbados Defence Force Sports Programme fourth with six. Brittons Hill (5) are fifth, while Empire and Deacons fall in sixth and seventh on four points. St. Andrew Lions sit just above Wotton with three points while Silver Sands, Ellerton and the Blackbirds close things out.
