Blackbirds bounce back in league

The University of the West Indies Blackbirds have finally spread their wings and used them to fly five spaces up the ladder to roost in 7th place in the standings of the Coca Cola Premier League.

After languishing at the bottom of the barrel for some time, UWI bounced back from a vicious 5-1 loss at the hands of the Barbados Defence Force Sports Programme to take a 4-0 win over Brittons Hill.

Playing at the Wildey Turf on Tuesday night, the Blackbirds were led to the resounding victory off the back of their young bloods, as all four goals were scored by members of the national Under-20 squad. Making his debut in the premier league this season, Tajio James left Brittons Hill hot and bothered when he rocked the nets in the 19th minute to see the Blackbirds up to 1-0 at the break. Going the other way, the 16-year-old got a second goal in the 67th to worsen the predicament for Brittons Hill.

Up next, it was Devonte Richards who beat the Brittons Hill keeper. He also made his debut in the league this season and got his first goal in the 78th minute. Niall Reid-Stephen had the final say in the game with a goal in the 90th with a comfortably converted penalty kick. He, however, is not new to the top-flight set up and is on his way to being one of the team’s most prolific goal-scorers.
The league is set to continue this weekend with games on Saturday and Sunday.
