Barry Mayers on pole for today’s CMRC top race

Barbados’ Barry Mayers is on pole for the Caribbean Motor Racing Championship Top Group after posting a time of 1:01.407 in qualifying yesterday at the Williams Digicel International Race Meet at Bushy Park Racing Circuit.

Mayers piloting the Suzuki SX4 which has not seen racing at Bushy Park in a couple of years to the fastest time of the Group 4 class in his fourth lap during the qualifying session.

He sits 1.4 seconds ahead of countryman Mark Maloney who had just finished qualifying in the Radicals the session before and jumped in his custom built Mazda RX3 but was a bit late in getting on the track for the qualifying.

He had only manage two hot laps before an alternator wire came off and then the rain came and ended the session.

Maloney said that he did not get a good lap in qualifying and felt that lap that “I was on when it came off and the car shut down I think would have put me on pole. But I am happy for Barry and happy his car is reliable and he has gotten a good position and it will make for good racing tomorrow.”

Mayers has battled with the SX4 as it carries a custom built DTM touring car Alfa Romeo 1990 engine but he is excited for the the prospects of today’s race meet.

But all has not been smooth sailing, “We do have one small problem with the brakes binding which is costing us I estimate about three quarters of a second a lap. It is unfortunate that there is nothing we can do for this race meet but we will try to get it fixed for the next race meet.”
As he reflected over the time spent building the car Mayers said that “the longest hold up has been the engine. The engine has been a nightmare I would never like to go back through again”.

“The engine has been to two engine builders one in England and the last engine builder was in California.”

Everything is custom made for the engine as the parts are virtually impossible to find and according to Mayers it takes four, five, six months to build and then, “Oh shoot! we need this and that is another six months.”

The grid is completed with Group 3 Class 3 Steve King posting the third fastest time a further 4.4 seconds off Maloney, while Sammy Cumberbatch suffered a popped throttle cable after only one hot lap and he was third in the class but behind Group 3 qualifier King by about 1.1 second.
Justin Campbell is next with his BMW 0.277 seconds off Cumberbatch, while Sean Maloney in his Mini will be alongside Campbell after posting a time 0.359 second behind him.

Trinidad’s Franklyn Boodram is next some seven seconds off the pole sitter, while Trinidad’s Frankie Boodram is 10 seconds behind the pole sitter.

In the other CMRC qualifying sessions Paul Vieira is on pole in the group 3 with Ronald Workman, Nazim Gafoor, Shan Seejattan, Shawn Eversley, Stuart Maloney and Ravi Singh rounding up the group.

Leading Group 2 is CMRC reigning champion T&T’s Marc Gill, followed by Mark Thompson who is a whooping four seconds off the pace.

Luke Bhola is next followed by Kenrick Husbands who is not in the CMRC chase.

The CMRC grid is completed by Haresh Nanan, Daryl Ali and Bridget Singh.
