Barbados take title in Canadian tour

WHEN the curtain came down on the 2016 Realtors Canadian Polo Tour, Team Barbados kept the title at home after winning the series by two matches. Playing in the final at Holders this past Sunday the local team took their second win of the series after drawing the first game five-all with the visitors and edging them out 6-5 in the second.

The hosts held sway in Sunday’s final for the majority of the clash getting off the mark in the first chukka through young Adam Deane, who had a good game. Deane would score again in the second, only to be followed by Richard Gooding, who gave the home-team a sound three-goal cushion before the half.

The third chukka brought up a hat-trick for Deane, however, it also saw Canada closing the gap with two goals. Pablo Falabella put the visitors on first while the Barbados Polo Club President, Wayne Archer, who was on loan for the evening, added the second. The final chukka saw Canada pulling a third back with under two minutes on the clock. The visitors came close to forcing an extra 30 seconds as they came agonisingly close to drawing level when Max Torokvei took a long shot at the South-end goal in the dying seconds of the match. However, the ball rolled just outside the left upright to see the game end at four goals to three.

In an earlier game, Diamonds International beat UNNA with an identical scoreline. Damian Luke scored twice for Diamonds, while Stuart Gill and Stephen Williams had one each. For UNNA, Salvador Duggan scored twice while Rhys Odle added the third.
