Barbados Polo Club to host double-header next week

With the 2017 polo season already in full swing, the Barbados Polo Club is about to up the ante this coming week as it takes on two tours.

Fans of polo and its social scene are in for an absolute treat as the local club will be hosting both the Villages and the ever-popular Diamonds International Battle of the Sexes simultaneously from this coming Sunday.

During a media conference held yesterday at Capital Media HD, Barbados Polo Club President Wayne Archer revealed details for the upcoming tours. Noting that an exciting week awaits all
patrons, Archer said that there were several on on-field and off-field activities planned.

Both tours are expected to be keenly contested as talented players will be rostered for each game. With Villages making a return after giving last year a miss, they will be bringing a seven-goal team headed by Francisco Balboa, who sports a five-goal handicap to take on an Events Unusual-sponsored Barbados team.

The Diamonds International men will have their hands full with the Virgin Atlantic Ladies as English Women’s Captain Hazel Jackson (2), Sarah Wiseman (2) and Emma Bowers (1) will be playing with a different local female each evening. With this particular tournament gaining more and more interest and momentum each year, Archer attributed the following to the growth of women in the sport.

“The ladies, as you all know, are extremely competitive and they take this very seriously. Women’s polo throughout the world has grown considerably throughout the last five years. In fact, they now have their own handicapping system when they get together and these ladies travel throughout the world and are in very high demand to play polo. We are lucky to have on the team, two English internationals who are coming to play with the ladies,” he said.

This year, through multiple alliances with Capital Media HD and Honey Jazz, the Club will be augmenting the off-field entertainment as DJ Kirk Brown, the ladies of Honey Jazz and DJ Deluxe
perform on the opening evening, January 29; while Brown will return for the final.

With two games on offer each day, the Villages tour is scheduled to play at 3:30 p.m., while the Battle of the Sexes is slated to rage on afterwards at 4:30 p.m.. Action starts as early as this coming Sunday at the Holders ground before moving to Apes Hill on Tuesday. Play returns to Holders for Thursday and Sunday’s big finals.
