Barbados invited to IBF 3x3 Tourney

Barbados has been invited to participate in an international 3x3 youth tournament organized by the International Basketball Foundation (IBF) in collaboration with the Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC).

In order to participate in the tournament, each interested country must hold national qualifiers. These national qualifiers will be held for both boys and girls teams and must be completed by October 2016. The winning teams of these qualifiers will represent Barbados at the Tournament which is tentatively scheduled for later this year.

It is to this end that the Barbados Amateur Basketball Association is hosting as part of its Summer Jam Youth Programme, the 3x3 basketball national qualifiers. The tournament will be for players between the ages of 15 - 17 (players born 1999 – 2001) for both girls and boys and is slated to take place September 3-4, 2016. This event is FIBA (Federation of International Basketball Associations) endorsed and all rules governing FIBA 3x3 basketball will be adhered to strictly.

Barbados recently took part in the Caribbean Basketball Confederation U16 Championships where they performed admirably. The boys made it to the semi-final round of games but were knocked out by the eventual winners, the Bahamas and again lost to Jamaica in the third place matchup and ended the tournament in fourth place. The girls’ team also did well but had to settle for fifth place.

The registration fee is $20.00 per team and the winners in both categories will represent Barbados at the regional 3x3 tournament being held later this year. The Barbados Amateur Basketball Association can be contacted in order to ascertain what else is needed to register and also to acquire registration forms and a copy of the FIBA rules governing the 3x3 basketball format.

Registration for the tournament closes on August 26, 2016. NO TEAMS will be allowed to be registered after that date.

The CBC is also considering including a 3x3 Championship for both Senior Men and Women to their calendar of events, so encouragement is being given by the BABA for all interested senior players to get familiar with the rules and the format in general. (AS)
