Barbados Derby looks wide open affair

There’s just no firm favourite leading up to the Massy United Insurance Barbados Derby at the Garrison Savannah on August 6  as the subscription list has now been closed.

For the first time in almost a decade, the race promises to be an extremely open affair with at least 13 horses being nominated after the third and final subscription closed last Friday for the race, which is the third jewel of the Barbados Triple Crown.

“I usually can pick out one horse, but this season you are looking at four or five horses with good chances,” said Mohommed Mohamad, Horseman Liason Officer at the Barbados Turf Club.

“I can honestly say this will be an open affair. Steven Allan (once fit), Daddy’s Wish, Northern Star, Sadler’s Dream and Stolen all with an even chance of winning, so to name a favourite is just too close to call,” he said.

The in-form Steven Allan has been scratched for the second Jewel of the Triple Crown on Saturday, June 25 because of injury after winning the Guineas last month. However, he is still entered in the Massy United Insurance Barbados Derby and will be monitored closely.

Massy United Insurance have committed to a purse of $68 000 for the Barbados Derby with the winners taking home a purse of $37 400, including a trophy.

“In the Guineas we saw Stolen who was only defeated by co-favourite Steven Allan. Because that race was so close and also because most of the other nominees have been prepping and performing, I would rather wait to the end of next week to be more certain, but I am very excited about the Massy United Insurance Barbados Derby this year,” he added.

The nominees for the 2 000 metres or ten furlong race are: Banja, Maussane, Silver Bullet, Big Red, Northern Star, Steven Allan, Brighton Belle, Poetry in Motion, Stolen, Daddy’s Wish, Siavonga, Sadler’s Dream and Kangaroo Jack.
