Barbados’ Chelsea Tuach rises up WSL International Rankings

Barbados’ top female surfer and Sports Tourism Ambassador, Chelsea Tuach, now sits at the top of the World Surf League (WSL) 2018 North American Rankings and is fourteenth (14th) on the WSL International Rankings, the highest ranked Caribbean surfer, after her recent outstanding performances in Martinique and Barbados.

Tuach created history by becoming the first Barbadian surfer to win a WSL 3000 event when she was crowned the Martinique Surf Pro’s first Woman Champion last week. She was the lone Caribbean surfer to earn a spot on the podium to the delight of the many local fans at the event.

“I am on cloud nine. I wanted to surf for the Caribbean and for all Caribbean peoples. I knew that I could win. I just wanted to create the best scoring opportunities by choosing the best waves. This win is very special because it is in my backyard and I am feeling very confident with my boards and my surfing and am looking forward to the upcoming events,” Tuach said in her post-Heat interview in Martinique.

Tuach carried the momentum through the recently concluded Barbados Surf Pro, where she ended a commendable fifth overall with her powerful, fluid surfing which saw her dropping scores in the good to excellent range.

She said, “I am feeling confident in my surfing right now and know that I can get scores in the good to excellent range once I am on the best waves. It feels good to be rising up the WSL ranks with some solid results here in the Caribbean. It is always nice to compete in front of a supportive crowd and I am super grateful for that support.

“I am currently 14th on the International rankings and my goal is to keep improving my surfing and my ranking. With this in mind, I am heading to Bali this week where I will be training hard on world class waves in warm water to really push my surfing. I will also be competing in the WSL 1000 event in Krui, Indonesia in mid April in preparation for the upcoming bigger 6000 events in June and July in Mexico and the United States,” she continued.
