Early CUT leaders

 

BARBADOS got off to a great start at the Caribbean Union of Teachers (CUT) Games in the British Virgin Islands yesterday.
 
After the sprint event, Barbados with 123 points was ahead of Jamaica with 102 points in the games, which brings together approximately 700 of the best athletes between the ages of 8 and 15 in the region.
 
Sikia Best from Barbados won the Under-13 Girls’ high jump with a clearance of 1.44m. Second was St. Kitts’ Ayazmia Dolphin with 1.41m and third was Kayla-Gray Clarke with 1.38m.
Barbados’ Malachi Harris won the Boys’ Under-13 shot put with an impressive throw of 12.06m, a distant second was Grenada’s Cameron Thomas with 9.92m and third was Omar Hodge from Anguilla (9.77m).
 
The winning ways of Barbados continued with Skye Spencer-Layne when she won the Under-11 Girls’ long jump with a distance of 3.97m. Rowland Kirton-Browne won the Under-15 Girls’ javelin with a throw of 28.63m, about four metres longer than her nearest rival.
 
In the cricket ball Under-9 throw, Barbados’ Shaziya Scantlebury won with 26.39m, while Leeona Thompson from Jamaica, who threw 22.33m, came second.
 
In the distance races, Barbados’ Asia Foster (3:11.48) edged out Bermuda’s Selah Tuzo (3:11.70) in the Girls’ 1000m Open.
 
Barbados’ Samuel Alkins (3:28.35) had to settle for second place in the Boys’ 1200m Open as he was beaten to the line by Jamaica’s Jevane Edwards (3:26.35).
 
Barbados also featured in the sprints with Tia Applewhaite winning the Under-9 80m dash in 11.96 secs from Jamaica’s Ramoya Thompson (12.03 secs) and Antigua’s Gerilyn Barnes (12.40 secs).
 
Joshua Moore (11.96 secs) was third in a close battle in the Boys’ Under-9 80m dash. The winner was Tajay Shaw (11:45 secs) from Jamaica and Johniff Gumbs (11.88 secs) from Antigua.
 
In the Under-11 Girls, Shonte Morris (13.83 secs) was just nipped at the line and had to settle for second in the 100m to Jamaica’s Chennel Thompson (13.73 secs).
 
Jayden Green came sixth in the Under-11 Boys’ 100m, which was won by Rodrique-Ivan Barnes (13.70 secs) from Antigua.
 
Aaliyah Agard (13.36 secs) was third in the Girls’ Under-13 100m, which was won by Brianna Lynton (12.60 secs) from Jamaica, while Jenell Smith (13.29 secs) from Anguilla was second.
 
Malachi Harris (12.93 secs) was second to Jamaica’s Roshane McLeod (12.16 secs) in the Boys’ Under-13 100m.
 
In the Girls’ Under-15 100m, Jaliyah Denny (12.69 secs) was third in a close finish for second. St. Lucia’s Zoe Dorville (12.63 secs) took that spot. The winner was Antigua’s Joella Lloyd (12.20 secs).
 
Barbados’ Darian Clarke and Jamaica’s Sachin Dennis had to be separated by the photo finish in the Under-15 Boys’ 100m. Clarke (11.11 secs) edged out Dennis (11.12 secs) in the end. Third place went to Royden Peets from St. Kitts with a time of 11:43 secs. (CG)
