Awareness reigns at Polo for Prostate 2020

The bar has been set very high for every game to follow as this year’s polo season opened with a bang this past weekend. Hundreds descended on the Barbados Polo Club’s Holders ground on Sunday evening as four teams slugged it outfor the 2020 edition of Polo for Prostate.

With all the players and their steeds going all out for the Barbados Cancer Society’s charity event, the games were hosted to raise funds and awareness for one of the lesser talked-about cancers which affects men. Although the weekend was littered with intermittent showers, they were not enough to keep the Robert Tempro and Cancer Society teams off the greens at Holders.

In the first game, the Robert Tempro team started with a half-point edge due to an inferior handicap, however, they did not need it to get over the line ahead of the Cancer Society. Playing in blue, the Robert Tempro side got off the mark first through the efforts of Daisy Day in the first chukka. On the opposite side Daisy’s sister Lola brought the green team – Cancer Society within striking range inside the same period.

There were no goals in the second chukka, but in the third, the Cancer Society jumped ahead by a slim half-point lead with another Lola Day goal. The final chukka saw the Tempro team putting the game to rest after Daisy and Ashleigh Deane both found the uprights to take a 3 1/2-2 win.

Things got even more heated in the second game when two completely different rosters suited up in the same colours under the same team names. The Robert Tempro team got off the mark first in this game with a solid shot from Rhys Odle. However, the Cancer Society shook that off and had a quick reply with Pablo Crespin and Olly Williams knocking the ball home to see them take the lead before the end of the chukka.

Jamie Dickson added a third in the second chukka but Adam Deane and Harry Manning had rebuttals of their own to see the score tied at 3-3 at halftime. In the third, Williams and Crespin added another two to see the Cancer Society into the final chukka with atwo-goal lead. However, that became a moot point as Odle showed somebrilliant individual skill to take the ball all the way to opposite ends and score back-to-back goals and tie things up before the final bell went.
