Lester Vaughan – the overall winners.

Athletes shine at Rivaldo Leacock Championship

After screeching to an abrupt halt earlier this year, athletes returned to action over the last couple of days with the Rivaldo Leacock Championship held at the Lester Vaughan School.

Athletes in three Divisions got the opportunity to showcase their ability on the grass track, which was a welcome return for many. Though there was a points tally for a winner over the two days, many thought the overall winner was being able to stage the event in these challenging times.

Kyeshea Husbands from Alleyne School (ALL) won the Girls’ First Form 100m in 13.50 secs. She was however beaten by her schoolmate, Jakaira Jones-Smith, in a close battle to the line in the 200m. Jones-Smith was clocked at 28.09 secs while Husbands stopped the clock in 28.13 secs. Jacodia Watson, Lester Vaughan (LVS), was third.

Jones-Smith made it a double over the weekend as she was also the 400m winner in 61.87 secs. Second went to Watson in 68.61 secs while Kenya Hinds (ALL) was third.

Kyeshea Husbands also won the Long Jump (4.45m).

Jayden Cummings from St. George Secondary School (SGSS) completed the double in the Boys’ 100m First Form Division. Cummings (13.70 secs) beat Kato Richards (14.91 secs) and Ramarco Rock (15.51 secs) to the line in the 100m.

Cummings then returned and won the 200m in 28.71 secs ahead of Kevin Pilgrim (29.80 secs) from the Alleyne School and Amar Pilgrim from Coleridge and Parry (CP) who was third. Richards had to settle for fourth and Rock was sixth in the 200m.

Kazzon King (SGSS) was the winner of the First Form 400m in 62.85 secs.

In the Girls’ 100m Under-15, Davina Gaskin from Lester Vaughan won the 100m in 13.67 secs from Shadaea Phillips from CP (14.11 secs) while Zakeila Small from Alleyne was third (14.79 secs).

In the 200m, it was Aniya Nurse from Alleyne School that surged to the front to win in an impressive 26.25 secs. Second was Gaskin (28.24 secs) and third was Phillips (29.16 secs).

Nurse showed her sprinting stamina as she was also the winner of 400m in 61.60 secs.

The Boys’ Under-15 saw a close battle in the 100m, which was won by Rico Alleyne (12.56 secs) from LVS while Geovanny Lee from CP was second (12.91 secs) and third was Jaheim Griffith in 13.38 secs.

There was a four-way battle in the 200m, which was separated by the photo finish. Jacobei Telemaque from LVS in 25.71 secs came out ahead of Kriston Nurse (25.73 secs – ALL), Jaden Bowen (25.74 secs – CP) and Rico Alleyne (25.89 secs).

Keshawn Griffith from CP won the 400m in 54.97 secs ahead of Nurse (ALL) who was clocked at 55.12 secs. Telemaque was fifth in this 400m.

Abbygaile Mayers from SGSS won the keenly contested Girls’ 100m Over-15, which saw first to sixth place separated by half a second. Mayers clocked 13.45 secs, while second place Doneisha Moore (SGSS) clocked 13.57 secs, and third was Davia Stuart from Alleyne School in 13.68 secs.

Mayers (27.70 secs) had to settle for third place in the 200m, which was won by Brieanna Boyce from ALL in 27.09 secs. Second was Ciara Piggott from CP in 27.24 secs.

Janeil Reid from SGSS in 60.46 secs won the 400m from Brieanna Boyce (60.47 secs).

Jamarco Gill from SGSS was the 200m winner in the Boys’ Over-15, clocked at 11.46 secs from Achilles Browne (11.62 secs) from Alleyne School, while third was Aaron Brathwaite in 11.75 secs. Fourth was Ashem Vaughn from SGSS in 11.81 secs.

Aaron Brathwaite won the Long Jump with a leap of 6.20m.

Gill completed the double when he also won the 200m in 23.22 secs from Brathwaite who clocked 23.87 secs, while Vaughn was third in 24.22 secs.

Savion Hoyte LVS won the 400m in 51.11 secs from Shem Williams (LVS) in 51.93 secs. Williams was also second in the Long Jump (6.13m).

In the field, Chloe Blackman (ALL) won the Girls’ Junior 1kg Discus (18.62m) and the 3kg Junior Shot Put (6.85m), while Jaden Bowen (CP) won the Boys’ Junior 1kg Discus (26.37m) and the 4kg Junior Shot Put (9.22m).

In the Senior Girls’ Discus, Ronasha Phillips (LVS) was the winner with 29.09m. Phillips also won the Senior Girls’ Shot Put with a throw of 10.33m.
