The Alleyne School dominate BSSAC XC Relay

Cheered on by spectators, the male athletes from The Alleyne School destroyed the field in two of the three Barbados Secondary Schools’ Athletics Champion-ships (BSSAC) Cross Country (XC) Boys’ 6x1 Relay events.

Running at the Combermere XC Circuit in Waterford on Tuesday, Alleyne won the U15 Boys and Senior Boys’ relays with ease. In the U15 Boys, they won the gold in 19:11.31 minutes, a full 39 seconds ahead of second-placed Harrison College in 19.50.67 while Queen’s College came home in 20:11.80 to round out the top three. The squad from the Northeast had to work harder in the Senior Boys, but the result was the same, gold for Alleyne, running away yet again from Harrison College, but this toss Combermere took third. Alleyne won in 17:47.78 minutes over HC with 17:56.39 minutes and Combermere in 18:02.36.

Earlier, Alleyne settled for third in the First Form Boys’ race in 23:01.16 minutes behind the Lester Vaughan School in first with their time of 22:05 68 minutes, chased all the way home by St. George Secondary School, who crossed in 22:10.85 minutes. The first race of the day started with victory for the Springer Memorial School with the young ladies leaving the others in the dust by well over a minute. The girls in blue and white took the gold in First Form Girls’ relay with a time of 24:08.03 minutes followed by a distant Christ Church Foundation School with 25:20.44 for second and third went to Coleridge and Parry School in 25:38.45.

Foundation got their time to shine when they broke the tape in first position in the U15 Girls’ with a winning time of 22:42.13. It looked at one point that they would be passed by the St. Michael School (SMS) on the last stretch, but the kick by Foundation was just too strong and St. Michael took the silver in 22:48.44 minutes. With a time of 23:54.46 minutes, Combermere came in not too far behind for the bronze. The Senior Girls were all the host school Combermere closing out the day in the girls’ category with a gold. Running away from the field in 22:16.86, Combermere denied SMS any glory as they again took silver in 22.43.35 minutes while third place went to Harrison College easing across the finish in 23:14.88.

The BSSAC XC Final is slated for tomorrow, November 15, at the National Botanical Gardens in Waterford. (AS)
