All set for 2016 Massy United Derby

All is in place and an exciting day is expected next weekend for the 2016 Massy United Insurance Barbados Derby Race day comes off at the historic Garrison Savannah. Slated for August 6th, champion trainer Victor Cheeseman will be chasing his third-straight derby win with Poetry in Motion from a field 10 other competitors in what is being touted as one of the most-balanced derbies in local history.

With nine races set for the day, all eyes will be on the track for Race 8 as Cheeseman and Poetry in Motion will have their work cut out for them. Cheeseman will have more than one horse in the race as Northern Star is also out of Cheeseman’s camp. The best of the best have all thrown their hats into the ring as Robert Peirce has Banja and Steven Allan in for the win. Jonathan Simpson also has two entries in Brighton Belle and Sadler’s Dream, while Andrew Nunes is training Sia Vonga and Kangaroo Jack. Stolen will be making an appearance under J. M Cozier, Nas Issa is readying Daddy’s Wish and Silver Bullet is being trained by Richard Deane.

This year marks 32 years of sponsorship for Massy United Insurance and during a media conference held yesterday at the Incitatus Members Lounge, Director of Business Development, Strategy and Marketing at the company, Michael Armstrong noted that his organisation was pleasantly pleased to continue its commitment to the event.

“Barbadians are already in a celebratory mood with the significant milestone of their 50th year of independence and it is an honour for Massy United Insurance to once again keep the public and horse racing fans in the festive spirit with the running of this year’s event. The derby is crucial to the horse racing industry in Barbados. Through over seven decades of this derby there has been a rapid development of this industry in Barbados. For Massy United Insurance to be involved over this period of three decades in the sponsorship of this race, speaks to the fact of our commitment to the sports growth in Barbados,” he said. (MP)
