Christ Church West DEO speaks at Town Hall Meeting

Broken wells, missing drain covers and lack of household emergency plans are amongst some of the concerns drawing the attention of the Christ Church West Central District Emergency Organisation.

At a Town Hall Meeting on Thursday night at the Church of God of Prophecy in Water Street, Chairman Rawle Sealy said that with the Wotton and Kingsland areas being prone to flooding, the presence of overgrown and broken wells were of major concern.

Jason Griffith, a member of the DEO highlighted that one of the two largest wells in the area had not been working for several years, while the other was not functioning fully. He predicted that in the case of heavy rainfall, property could be damaged as the water would have no where else to go but onto persons’ properties and into their homes.

In addition, he indicated a few wells and drains where there were no covers, placing unsuspecting children at risk.

“In the case of one such uncovered well, there is a five foot drop into the hole and if a child falls into there and makes the decision to climb through the pipe that is in there, there is another ten foot drop a few feet away. We do not want anything like this to happen,” he stated.

Saying that caution tape had been placed around that well and several others that posed a danger to the public’s safety, he outlined the DEO’s intention of contacting the Drainage Division to have these areas fixed in the quickest possible time.

Sealy said that the organisation was actively engaging in educating its constituents, noting that in a survey of 70 households in Salvation Drive and Clearview Drive, it had been noted that many residents had no clue where the fire hydrants in the neighbourhood were located and had no emergency plans in place.
