UWI takes tops in Women’s League

THE University of the West Indies can now taste their second title on the tips of their tongues in the Barbados Football Association’s Women’s League as they have taken the lead by a sliver after the latest round of games in the competition.

Now tied on points and goal-difference with many-time champions National Sports Council, the UWI ladies have only taken the lead on the merit of goals scored in the season after whipping Technique eight goals to two on Sunday night at the Usain Bolt Sports Complex.

Caitlyn Padmore was on fire in the night-cap game and had two goals in the back of the nets before 15 minutes had passed (6th, 14th). However, Technique were able to pull one back from a Shakieta Marshall penalty (16th) just after UWI’s Rianna Cyrus had put one into the upright.

Padmore continued the onslaught and scored twice more in the 19th and 25th before team captain Ashanee Thompson made it 5-1 in the 26th. Technique were awarded yet another penalty and UWI custodian Cadijah Mars was easily beaten once again by Marshall on the half-hour mark. Padmore closed out her account and the half with her fifth goal of the night in the 45th minute.

Things were a bit slower in the second half as Technique continued to try to throw a wrench into UWI’s title campaign. Cyrus finally found redemption as she knocked home two back-to-back goals in the 77th and 79th to seal the deal.

Although they took a clean win in the first game, the 2-0 victory was not enough to keep the Sports Council ladies on top of things. Playing against Kick Start Genesis, a goal on either side of the break got NSC the points that they needed to stay in striking range of the leaders. Kimberly Ellis was first to score in the 33rd minute while the diminutive Patrina Brathwaite put a classy header in the nets past a deputising Rowland Kirton-Browne in the 69th.

Right in the middle of things, Mavericks cemented their third-place with a 6-0 defeat of Ellerton. One of the less painful encounters for the debutantes, national team striker Felicia Jarvis got the ball rolling in the 15th minute while Moesha Goodman, another national player, was five minutes behind her with a goal of her own. Hannisha Hoyte got her third goal of the season in the 30th while Jarvis closed out yet another hat-trick with goals in the 34th and 41st. Kerisha Catlyn had the final say in the match-up with an 87th-minute strike.

The league is set to continue this evening with two games at two venues. At Friendship, National Sports Council will be taking on Eden Stars Football Club Unity Stars, while UWI are at the Usain Bolt Sports Complex against Mavericks. Both games begin at 6:30 p.m.
