St. George South eyeing a double

THE chance to join the upper echelons of the David Thompson Memorial Constituency Councils’ Football Classic as one of the few teams to win back-to-back competitions has fallen to St. George South, as last year’s winners have booked themselves a berth in this year’s final. With other achievers of the feat including the City of Bridgetown and Christ Church East-Central, the defending champions will have to get past a solid St. Andrew side if they intend to be counted among the chosen few.

With the semi-finals coming off this past Sunday night at Gall Hill, St. John, a single goal in the night-cap game saw St. George South paving their way to a second final in as many years. Cementing himself as one of the team’s most valuable assets, Shakille Belle gave St. George South the game-winner in the 45th minute, to which St. Thomas would have no reply.

In the earlier game, St. Andrew rolled to a sound victory over St. Michael West as they put in three unanswered goals for the win. Justin White opened things in the 19th minute and the score remained that way for the rest of the first half and most of the second. It was not until late in the game that Raymond Hope beat the keeper in the 90th minute, only to be followed by Ryan Stuart in the 93rd.

The competition is set to come to a climax on Sunday, December 10 at Kensington Oval. St. Michael West and St. Thomas clash first in the third-place playoff at 4:30 p.m., while the main event between St. Andrew and St. George South kicks off at 7:30 p.m.
