McDonald wins Co-operators General’s secondary schools’ ‘speak off’ competition

Danielle McDonald of the St. Michael School made an animated and well researched presentation at the finals of the Co-operators General Insurance “Speak Off” competition which were held at the company’s Headquarters. Danielle amassed the most points amongst a very competitive field of six (6) finalists.

The students had to present on one of two topics, “Why should I make general insurance a career of choice” and “The relevance of general insurance in today’s society”. Danielle presented on the latter. Second place went to Iyanla Jordan of the Alleyne School and Mathew Weatherhead of Harrison College placed third.

Cheryl Forde, the Human Resources and Marketing Manager said the competition now in its third year, is designed to expose the youth and help them with their research and presentation skills. In addition, from the company’s perspective, given so many Barbadians seem to be unaware of the practices and obvious benefits of insurance; the company is ensuring that the younger generation understands and appreciates the important role general insurance plays in any develop society. To this end, the topics students are asked to research and present on, all have an emphasis on insurance.

The competition is open to all secondary schools and caters to students ages 15-18.
