UWI pull away from Mavericks in Women’s League

TWO goals by Rianna Cyrus, one hour apart, is what set clear lines between the University of the West Indies and Maverick Women as the Barbados Football Association’s Women’s League continued over this past week. With the two teams previously separated by only goal-difference, the three points picked up by the UWI ladies on Thursday was what they needed to set them apart and cement them in second place on the table.

Now on 15 points after five wins in six games, UWI struck first at the Wildey Astro Turf with Cyrus rocking the nets in the tenth and 70th minutes. Felicia Jarvis pulled one back for Mavericks in the 83rd minute, putting herself back on top of the goal scorers with her 11th, but it was not enough to keep her team from a second loss. Mavericks stay on 12, from four wins in their six games.

Earlier in the week on Tuesday, the National Sports Council kept their record flawless at the top of the table as they beat Eden Stars Football Club Unity Stars, four goals to one. With the first goal coming from an own-goal in the fourth minute, Kamillah Burke added two more in the 18th and 30th minutes. Kimberly Ellis added the fourth in the 35th minute, while Nashandi Clarke gave Unity Stars their consolation in the 52nd minute, only the second goal conceded by the Sports Council for the season.

League action continues today with games making a move to Bagatelle. The first game sees Kick Start Genesis and Technique going at it from 3:30 p.m., while the National Sports Council and Ellerton are up at 5:30 p.m. The final game at 7:30 p.m. will pit Unity Stars against Mavericks.
