BIBA career showcase well received

THERE was a steady stream of students heading into the career showcase hosted by the Barbados International Business Association (BIBA) at the University of the West Indies on Wednesday afternoon.

Chair of the organising committee, Carolyn Attong, explained that this event is part of the week of activities held to celebrate International Business Week, which is now in its seventh year.

According to Attong, “The focus is on introducing the students to different careers in the industry. We have a wide range of careers and we are really happy to take this opportunity to engage these students to what opportunities are out there.”

The chair explained that the event also included break-out sessions, where students from the campus and other invited schools could learn more about interviewing techniques and other tools that will help them to enter the world of work.

Several exhibitors on hand represented a number of areas in the sector, including accounting, marketing, human resources, social work and psychology, tourism marketing, project management, law and volunteerism.

Attong said in order to take the sector further there must be the appetite for the country to engage offshore companies. “We just have to look at our laws and taxation to make sure that we are encouraging companies to come to the Caribbean to do business,” she said, noting that local companies are a part of the push to engage in what is also being done in the offshore sector.

The organiser highlighted the work being carried out by Invest Barbados in terms of marketing Barbados. “As our president said, there is no major fall-out and we hope that we continue to see businesses come into Barbados,” she said.
