The Barbados girls celebrating their win over Dominica on Sunday night.

Barbados take two in Jean Pierre tourney

BARBADOS are on the right track to successfully defending their crown in the 2016 Caribbean Netball Association’s Jean Pierre Youth Tournament, which is currently being held at the Netball Stadium.

Heading into last night’s proceedings, the hosts had taken two wins in as many days to keep their record clean ahead of Day 3 of the seven-session championship. After beating Grenada, 38-17 in the opening game on Saturday night, the local lasses continued in that vein, this time defeating Dominica, 29-13 in their first round game.

The home team found it easy going in the first quarter with Goal Shoot Tower Lorde knocking down eight of ten attempts. Her Goal Attack, Rashana Thorne only nailed two of her five shots, however they stood comfortably over the visitors who only had three points after Goal Shoot Celena Langlaise hit the target three of the five times.

In the second, Dominica played a more aggressive game which saw Goal Attack Rachel Seraphin being switched out for Kayla Telemaque. Seraphin only had one empty shot in the first half while Telemaque had two goals from three points to lead the scoring despite not being in that position for the entire period. Langlaise only got one from three shots to help bring up six by the half. In the home corner, Lorde had one of one while Thorne had a better time in the second with four from six shots to bring up 15.

Barbados had another good quarter in the third, picking up nine points from 12 shots. Lorde kept up her consistency, this time scoring six of eight shots and Thorne knocked down three of four. Dominica’s percentages were also good as Telemaque made the most of her one shot and Langlaise got two points of her three shots to see the quarter end 24-9.
Dominica never gave up the fight and played as hard as they could to the end. However, they were no match for the local girls. Telemaque had no shots in the last quarter and all four points came from Langlaise who did it in five attempts. Lorde got four of seven to end on 19 from 26 while Thorne nailed one from four shots to end with ten from 19.

Also playing on Sunday night, Grenada were held to a second loss as they came up against Jamaica in an encounter that ended 45-11. Trinidad and Tobago were also big winners over Antigua and Barbuda with a 35-11 result, while Bermuda and St. Lucia played to a close 31-29 finish in favour of the former. The competition continues today with games at the Netball Stadium from 6:15 PM.
