Not backing down

Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU) General Secretary Toni Moore has hinted that there will be no letting up by workers of the Barbados Water Authority (BWA) who are currently on strike.

In fact, there may be greater action on the horizon. Moore did so while addressing a meeting called by the BWU at Solidarity House yesterday. This meeting was attended by unionised staff of the BWA and other unionised workers from across the public sector.

Moore said that the union has reached “the last straw” because the BWA management failed to meet the deadline of March 10 set by BWU.

“March 15th has come and it has gone and eight days later on March 23rd there has not been a single word from the management or board of the Barbados Water Authority. Not a single word, not a proposal nor an apology. Such arrogance and contempt for this union and workers we represent will not be tolerated.”

Therefore Moore asserted, “The BWU family is bigger than the Barbados Water Authority and reminders of this are now necessary. But in the matter of the Barbados Water Authority workers, after eight days out not any whimsical gesture for settlement would not fly.”

Meanwhile, commenting on the empathy shown by the Labour Minister during a media briefing held earlier that day at Parliament, Moore said “at this stage eight days later, empathy alone would not suffice.
