Simone Rudder, Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Transport and Works.

Youth hear about potentially rewarding careers in MTW

Jobs in the technical areas of the Ministry of Transport and Works can be rewarding and offer long-term career opportunities.

This was the message delivered to a number of young females attending the Ministry of Transport and Works’ Gender Equality Workshop at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre this week.  Addressing the females gathered from secondary schools across the island, The Ministry’s acting Permanent Secretary, Simone Rudder, told the youth gathered, that they would learn more about these opportunities for technical jobs in the Ministry, as the workshop progressed throughout the week.

“Unfortunately, there are currently relatively few women who have chosen to pursue a career in the technical areas. Based on discussions the Ministry of Transport and Works had with stakeholders such as the Ministry of Education, the Division of Youth and the Bureau of Gender Affairs, this current Workshop will be Phase I in a project to sensitise approximately 280 females. Phase II will provide the necessary training of these females via work attachments and hopefully progressively move towards work within the Ministry of Transport and Works and other technical areas in the public service,” Rudder stated.

Deputy Chief Technical Officer responsible for projects at MTW, Nash Lovell, told the students that they would be hearing from a number of females who have already excelled in the Ministry.

“The concept is that we will have the young females within our midst who will be the leaders of tomorrow, transition if they will into the world of technical and engineering fields,” he said of the planned activities.

“As you would know, out of the University of West Indies, we are having more women than men, so it is likely that already we are seeing that transition occurring in the public service, where most of the  permanent secretaries and persons of related grain are actually women and so it is likely that some of you here, who will attend this workshop, will hopefully be so bolstered by this experience, that you will transition and choose the path for doing engineering or (other technical areas) in the future,” Lovell remarked.
