Yaicob, Smith FCCA essay winners in B’dos

Students of the Deighton Griffith & Rock Christian Schools emerged victorious in the Barbados leg of the annual FCCA Essay Competition.

From a total of 52 entries, students of the Deighton Griffith Secondary & The Rock Christian School scored high in the (FCCA) Children’s Essay competition 2016.

The contest, which is a tourism awareness initiative of the National Tourism Host Pogramme, a department of the Barbados Tourism Product Authority (BTPA), invited local students to pen original stories using the topic, “If you were a cruise passenger, what would you want to see and do in your destination (Barbados)?”

Reigning victorious in the Junior Division was Woletta-Israel Yaicob of The Rock Christian Primary School, who won an Apple iPad and $300. Arielle Myesha Harewood of the St. Matthew’s Primary, and Fallon Miller from Harrison’s College, were the second and third place winners within this division, and both earned monetary prizes for their submissions.

Dominating the Senior Division was Rhianna Smith from Deighton Griffith Secondary, the lucky winner of a BDS$4000 cruise voucher from the Barbados Tourism Product Authority and Foster & Ince Cruise World. Second place and third place went to Selyna Hollingsworth from the Christ Church Foundation School, and Saydiah Russell from Harrison’s College, respectively. Both will also receive monetary prizes.

Programme Officer in the National Tourism Host Programme, Marsha Armstrong, expressed satisfaction with the quality of this year’s essays, and congratulated the students and their teachers on a job well done.

“We are pleased with this year’s response, having receiving 52 entries from a number of private and public, primary and secondary schools across the island. We are happy that our young people are aware that tourism is an important industry for the island, as well as to what the island has for visitors and locals to experience while they are here.

“The BTPA wishes to encourage all schools to organise tours and site visits to places of interests across the island as fun outdoor activities. These are practical exercises that incorporates our heritage. This will assist in instilling a sense of national pride within our young Barbadians. Families are also encouraged to explore the unique places across this lovely island of Barbados during school vacations. We wish to encourage our young people to be ambassadors wherever they go.

“The first place winning essays were forwarded to the FCCA Headquarters located in Miami to represent Barbados’ entries in the regional competition.”
