Work on target at Thelma Vaughan Memorial Home

Construction work at the Thelma Vaughan Memorial Home has begun and it is slated to be completed in April 2017.

This was revealed by the Home’s Deputy Chairman, Susan Wiles recently. She was among attendees at a press conference held at the Glebe Land, St. George location.
Also during this briefing, it was announced that work had begun on property for a new Day Care and Respite Centre for severely brain-injured children. Both projects are being undertaken through the assistance of the Sandy Lane Charitable Trust.

Addressing the gathering, Julian Sacher, one of Trust’s Trustee, explained that the Home had raised “in excess of $400 000” towards the work. However, they were “far shy of funds needed to complete the desperately required building work”. Recognising their need, the Trust opted to assist. They will be repairing the building at the St. George residential centre, which houses the kitchens, the common living, dining and administration. The kitchen will also be extended.

Adding to this, Trustee, Phillipa Challis stated that when completed the new Day Care and Respite Centre will not only benefit the Home but the Because of Jenna Trust. This charity she explained, “Has long been hoping to identify a facility for these special children where they can receive day-to-day care, support, therapy and special attention outside of their homes. Constructing a dedicated building space was simply ‘out of their financial reach.’”

She further said that, “The Sandy Lane Charitable Trust will fund the balance of the building and garden construction and all equipment costs for the new building and the specialist programmes.”

The partnership is a win-win for both entities. Challis pointed out that facilitating such partnerships is part of the Trust’s role.

“As a donor Trust, our role is to support smaller charities, to provide the funds to help them champion the change and reach the children in community at large, whether through education, medical initiatives, community outreach programmes, counselling programmes to name but a few. The Sandy Lane Charitable Trust also believes we play a vital role in seeking out new partnerships and bringing together individual charities, building bridges and creating relationships for the greater good.” (MG)
