Finance and Economic Affairs Minister, Christopher Sinckler congratulates Chairman of Williams Industries Incorporated, Ralph ‘Bizzy’ Williams on the opening of Regus Business Centre

Williams passionate about energy

Local businessman, Ralph ‘Bizzy’ Williams is reiterating his commitment to advancing the alternative energy sector in this country.

Williams, the Chairman of Williams Industries Incorporated, referred to this goal of the country operating on 100 per cent alternative energy, as he addressed those attending the official launch of the Regus Business Centre located at One Welches located in Welches, St. Thomas.

“For your information, the roof of this building is covered with photovoltaic panels installed by Williams Solar, and if you look outside, the car parks will soon be covered… and the company that is using the power is Regus. So we are as committed as we ever were,” he said.

However, Williams said there is an issue that needs to be ironed out in order to achieve that goal of energy self sufficiency – the pricing of electricity generated through those alternative sources. He told the audience, which included Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs, Christopher Sinckler that there is still not in place, a minimum price for electricity generated from the sun, and as such, took the opportunity to appeal to Minister Sinckler to use his “considerable influence” to get his ministerial colleague responsible for Energy to address the matter.

“With the rate tied to the price of oil, you can’t bank the systems,” he stated.

Referring earlier to Regus, the leading global provider of flexible office spaces, Williams said the plan is to fill that business centre with persons from all walks of life and to expand those operations right across the Caribbean region including Trinidad, Jamaica, Guyana and St. Lucia. He added that through the Centre the companies will also be better poised to earn much needed foreign exchange.

“A lot of businesses in Barbados do well in Barbados, but they are not earning foreign exchange across the region and outside the region. And, our plan is to try to maximise the amount of foreign exchange that we can earn and this is one of the plans for doing that,” he indicated. (JRT)
