Indar Weir greets members of the St. Philip South branch after being named the winner of the nomination by General Secretary of the BLP Senator Dr. Jerome Walcott at the Hilda Skeene Primary on Sunday night.

Weir cruises through St. Philip South nomination

INDAR Weir will be the Barbados Labour Party representative for the St. Philip South seat whenever the election bell is tolled.

Weir who ran on the St. Philip North ticket during the 2013 elections was defeated by Michael Lashley. He will face off against Attorney General Adriel Brathwaite, who defeated then BLP representative Anthony Wood in 2008.

Party faithful flocked to the Hilda Skeene Primary on Sunday evening for was anticipated to be a keen contest as the four candidates, Mona Alleyne, Ahmed Proverbs, Sylvan Greenidge and Weir all pleaded their case to their would-be constituents as part of the comprehensive voting process.

While there might have been some doubt as to who would come out on top, after the counting of the first box, it was clear that Weir was out front by a significant margin with 17 votes while his nearest competition was Alleyne, who copped six votes. After the third and final box was counted General Secretary of the BLP Senator Dr. Jerome Walcott revealed that Weir won the nomination with 48 votes, followed by Alleyne with 17, Greenidge with eight and Proverbs seven votes.

Weir while thanking the constituents said he felt the need to serve the constituency of St. Philip South and the people of Barbados. He said even though he came into politics as a rookie, he has learned from the 2013 election.

He assured that his team will be connecting with the community through Town Hall meetings.

“The solutions must come from you all. I dare not tell you what it is you need. You tell me, I bring the fix. I am tired of the politics where people believe that you must come and offer pie in the sky and then when people don’t get what you promise, they are disillusioned and then they start to turn on politicians. We the future of the BLP must make that change, and end that conversation about a third party. We are the re-engineered BLP. I am part of that process,” he said. (JH)
