We must do more to reduce carbon footprint

One senior tutor believes that while the Million Trees for 2020 project was a wonderful programme, more must be done to reduce our global carbon footprint.

This is the view of Henderson Nurse, Senior Tutor at the Erdiston Teachers’ Training College. During their tree planting ceremony that took place yesterday on the College grounds, Nurse expressed that while the programme was a commendable one, planting trees alone would not be enough to sustain and save our planet.

“Planting trees cannot in itself save our planet, we also as individuals have to make an attempt to reduce our carbon footprint,” he said.

“We have to do things in our daily lives to make sure that we don’t pollute our environment so that we do not destroy it. So it is important as individuals to know that we also have to make that attempt at caring for our environment. We don’t want it to be said of us that we are people who easily and readily fouls its own nest and that is kind of what we are doing.”

“Yes we have these community type programmes but we as individuals have to play our part in saving our planet. It is extremely important.”

Chairman of the Board of Management of the ETTC, Sylvia Henry highlighted that yesterday’s activity was only one of the many they planned to execute throughout the year. She stated that the activities they planned to take part in, which would be revealed at a later date, were part of this year’s We Gathering exercise.

She lauded the efforts of the teachers and students present, and thanked them for taking part in yesterday’s activity.

She went on to note that she viewed the exercise as a symbolic one.

“The fact that you are here today and planting trees is symbolic to what we do here at the College. We plant excellence at our schools, we nurture that excellence we monitor and sustain that excellence as we monitor our teachers in the classroom and eventually the country will see the fruits of our labour,” she said.
