Walk for Jesus to take place next month

Christians across Barbados are being encouraged to come out on August 1, Emancipation Day to “Walk for Jesus”.

The event which encourages Christians to openly show their love and appreciation for God, is being organised by the Blessed Widow Ministries (BWM). Founder of BWM Sharmane Roland-Bowen, said it will also serve as the official launch of the ministry which is geared towards helping widows in this country better cope after the loss of their spouses.

“As believers too many of us are ashamed to be Christians. We go to church, raise our hands and say amen, but when we come out among colleagues and friends and families and they behave indifferent we remain silent and do nothing about it; we don’t stand up for Jesus. Jesus said we must be the light of the world and let our light shine among men, but it can’t shine if we put it under the table. We need to have it out there shining, where our actions earn the respect of our colleagues and of our family,” she said.

Roland-Bowen’s remarks came as she contended that non-Christians are not afraid to stand up for what they believe. She made the point while noting that less than a week after the scheduled 5K Walk thousands will gather for Kadooment Day, the climax of the Crop Over Season, and she is adamant that Christians too must be willing and prepared to be as bold and spread the message of Jesus Christ and salvation.

“We need to be bold and celebrate Jesus and our emancipation from the slavery of men; we have been freed through Christ and have much to be thankful for. That’s why we have chosen Emancipation Day as the date for our walk,” she said.

She added that the walk will start and end at Lears Pasture, St. Michael, where those who cannot join the walk are encouraged to gather to see live performance of music and dance, as they seek to spread the word of God. She is therefore sending out a call for all Christians, regardless of their denomination, to come out and show their love for Jesus.

“We want young people especially to know that Christian life is not boring, and that everything you do – how you live your life – should be done to the honour and glory of God,” she continued.

She explained that the funds raised from the sale of the t-shirts for the walk will be used to help BWM carry out its mandate of providing job training, counselling and financial assistance for widows. At the event, she said they will be looking to build the database of skilled artisans and professionals interested in volunteering their services to assist widows in need, and will be encouraging such persons to sign up.

“If you are a carpenter, mason, gardener, lawyer, electrician, plumber, whatever your area of expertise, God would have given you that talent and you should use that talent to give back to Him by helping out persons in need and you will in turn be blessed,” she stated. (JRT)
