The View – a cut above the rest

Barbados’ newest elderly care facility has gone beyond just offering traditional long-term residential care.

The View Senior Citizens Home has answered the call of the need for more Elderly Day Care for those persons who do not have anyone to look after the elderly in their care on a daily basis, but do not want to leave them overnight or for an extended period. In addition, The View which is nestled in the hills of Shop Hill, St. Thomas, is providing Respite Care, also known as short-term stay care, to persons travelling on vacation from any regional or international location with an elderly person and is looking for a place that caters to their needs, as well as for Barbadian caregivers who need to take a break.

“This 22-bed facility is outfitted with amenities designed to make your loved ones feel safe, comfortable and loved in a home away from home environment,” revealed Fabian Sargeant, President of Support Our Society (SOS) Consultancy of The View, which is
finally a reality after years of hard work and perseverance by Paulette Broomes.

The View is designed to cater to the needs of those persons experiencing cognitive dysfunction and to provide home care support to families of elderly persons needing residential care.

Sargeant was at the time addressing the opening on Saturday evening, which also saw the launch of the collaboration between The View and SOS Consultancy, one of the first private social work agencies in Barbados.

“Part of what we do is Care Services. So, our collaboration really will be the geriatric care management component, and what will separate The View from all the other nursing homes, will be the cohort of social workers that will be assigned here, ensuring that all the clients receive the necessary care that they need,” he stated.

Both the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) candidate for St. Thomas, Dr. Rolerick Hinds and Opposition Member of Parliament for that constituency, Cynthia Forde were on hand during the opening, offering their congratulations to Broomes on her venture.

Dr. Hinds acknowledged that the facility is safe and friendly for seniors to reside, where MP Forde pointed to the ambience and professional staff complement.

“I believe that the kind of quality care Mrs Broomes will offer will be par excellence, different from what we see in other homes. I am not crying down anybody else’s homes, but there are some [where] we can see that all is not well. But, I believe that here in St. Thomas in The View, we are going to have good quality service meted out to those clients coming here,” Forde expressed. (TL)
