UWI Open Campus hosts Open Day

It was Open Day at the UWI Open Campus yesterday and students enrolled in the CXC Day School, along with visitors, had the opportunity to explore the range of programmes on offer at the Campus.
Officer-in-Charge of the UWI Open Campus Barbados, Ryan Byer, gave a bit more detail about the Open Day and its objectives, whilst speaking to The Barbados Advocate, following the brief opening ceremony held at the Campus, in the Pine St. Michael.

“We have a CXC Day School and within that Day School, we have approximately 200 students with us over the period and what we really wanted to focus on, was to show them some of the other programmes we have to offer. We know some of them will go on to other institutions based on their career choices, but we wanted to show them the various face to face and online courses that we have,” Byer explained.

“Our face to face courses, basically, they are 12 and 18 months programmes in Project Management, Corporate Administration, Marketing, Public Relations and Advertising. Then there are our short workforce development courses, which are really geared towards persons that are already employed, courses such as Event Planning, Quick Books and Supervisory Management, which are really good for persons working in
institutions that want to transition,” Byer noted.

“Then there are our online courses. Our online application portal is now open and persons can go to our website at www.open.uwi.edu and look at the various online programme options that we have.

“We really want to encourage persons to go and explore their future educational pursuits, with the Open Campus,” Byer added.

Programme Assistant at the UWI Open Campus, Sherwin Rollins, noted that a highlight of the day, was a presentation of benches made by representatives of “Courtesy Garage”, a
long- time supporter of the UWI Open Campus.

Rollins also indicated that a number of business partners were invited to set up various stations at the Open Campus, for the benefit of the students.

When The Barbados Advocate visited, numerous students were taking advice from Fiona Weeks of the “HIV/AIDS Commission”. Karen Austin, Managing Director of “Days Bookstore” was also on hand giving out book vouchers, which students could redeem at a later date, when purchasing books from the store. (RSM)
