The UWI Cave Hill Campus is currently hosting Health Week 2016, under the theme “Fit and Fab at 50, II”.

Chair of the Wellness Committee, Dr. Damian Cohall, explained yesterday that the health week, which runs from June 6 to 10, follows on from the activities held to celebrate the Campus’ 50th anniversary, and part two is now being held in conjunction with the national celebration of the island’s Golden Jubilee of Independence.

The week got started with the Mass Monday event held in LT1 of the Campus yesterday, under the theme “Let’s Celebrate: Barbados We Come From”.

The Mass Monday event saw Gina Pitts, CEO of the Heart and Stroke Foundation, delivering a health and wellness talk, after which there was an entertainment segment, consisting of line dancing, poetry, storytelling and musical renditions.

The Health Week continues with Wellness Wednesday, under the theme “Back To Our Roots”, and the focus will on having persons live a balanced lifestyle.

“One of the things that we normally try to push for Health Week is this holistic approach towards being healthy. And we speak about preventive medicine more so than curative, because we want to do the right things to prevent persons from getting ill. But if you do get ill, we also want to think about the right steps and measures to take place in dealing with the illness,” Cohall explained.

During Wellness Wednesday, there will be free breast cancer screening for both female and male staff members of the UWI, presenting their Campus ID. There will also be a Farmers Market, where persons can purchase local produce, and subsidised manicures and pedicures will also be offered by the Touch of Eden Spa. There will also be “Campus Can Cook” cook off competition.

The grand finale will be Fantastic Friday, which will commence with a closing ceremony and then a tree planting exercise, featuring the planting of a bearded fig tree on Campus. There will also be a health fair, at which HIV testing will be offered and sexual best practices emphasised.

The evening will culminate with a Family Fun Evening, consisting of a Run /Walk at the Usain Bolt Complex, and the Campus will close at 3:00 p.m. to facilitate this. The Barbados Defence Force will also be passing the commemorative Broken Trident on to the Campus, and patrons will have the opportunity to sign the Pledge Book. (RSM)
