Work to be done on bus terminals in the City

EVEN as Government takes steps to create a new passenger terminal and concourse for the Constitution River Terminal, Minister of Transport and Works, Michael Lashley, says they are hoping to get work started soon on the two other terminals in the Bridgetown area.

He told those attending a ceremony yesterday morning to mark the designation of the Constitution River Terminal and the groundbreaking for the new passenger concourse, that his ministry is cognisant of the ageing bus facilities in the City, and so they have identified, as two of its key proposed projects for next financial year, the re-development of the Fairchild Street Bus Terminal and the construction of the Seaview Terminal on Princess Alice Highway.

“I know, it is within my knowledge, that Cabinet approved Seaview Terminal, that there is Town Planning permission also for the terminal, the only thing that is missing, obviously, is the financing and we hope to get that financing in the near future,” he said.

Lashley indicated that they are hoping to secure such funds from CAF – the Development Bank of Latin America Development Bank. He said they are seeking a meeting with officials from that agency, and once the project is accepted they will be able to get such work under way.

“Together with the new Constitution River Terminal, this enhancement of the transport infrastructure in Bridgetown will serve to advance the modernisation of Barbados’ public transport sector. It also ties in with the concept of urban renewal.

“In addition, there will be a significant positive impact on Barbados’ economic growth and development prospects, because a greater flow of commuters into Bridgetown will lead to increased business opportunities and economic activity in the city,” he said.

Lashley added that the projects are in keeping with Government’s objectives as outlined in the Physical Development Plan and the Medium-Term Growth and Development Strategy. (JRT)
