University of Havana, UWI sign MOUs

Yesterday morning saw the formal marriage between the University of Havana and the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, through the signing of two memorandums of understanding.

During the event, that took place in the Main Conference Room of UWI, Dr. Tennyson Joseph, Head of the Department of Sociology and Social Work at UWI, explained that yesterday morning was indeed a happy occasion because the signings of the MOUs came after a culmination of several months of complete work between the working groups of the University of Havana and UWI; as well as the Faculty of Medicine, in its own work, and the Ministry of Health in Cuba.

Pro Vice-Chancellor and Principal of UWI Cave Hill Campus, Professor Eudine Barriteau expressed that the signing of the two MOUs was a demonstration of the campus’ continued internationalisation effort, led very vigorously by the Faculty of Medical Sciences.

“They are playing a great part in our internationalisation thrust, not the only department, but they have been very vigorous in taking the campus international, and this morning is another example of this. After all, what we are doing at Cave Hill is
trying to fulfil our vision in a very deliberate manner in being a global university rooted in the Caribbean,” she said.

“Over the years we have developed links with some of the major universities in the world, but we take great care to ensure that we have formal links with the great universities and institutions close to us. We have the greatest respect for the institutions and universities within the Republic of Cuba.”

Barriteau expressed that she was particularly pleased to sign the MOU with the University of Havana and noted that they expected to see greater opportunities for exchange of staff and students and for joint research on issues of importance to the
region.

The Principal explained that the MOU with the Ministry of Health in Cuba was of great importance to the Cave Hill Campus and to Barbados as it allowed for research of the use of drugs and technologies, which will have a considerable impact on public health in Barbados.
