Tree planting in honour of Dr. Colin Hudson

The work of environmentalist and innovative scientist the late Dr. Colin Hudson has not gone unnoticed by the Barbados Community College (BCC).

Commemorating Earth Day 2018, BCC celebrating 50 years of Community planted a Frangipani Tree in honour of Dr. Hudson, who contributed significantly to developments in Sugarcane Agriculture and Environmental Awareness in Barbados.

The planting ceremony took place on BCC grounds on the side-lines of the recently held annual “Science Expo”.

Tutor in Chemistry and Environmental Chemistry, Yaisa Peter shared “I had the opportunity to work with the second year environmental students and they worked very hard on projects revolving around the theme, “Creating a Greener, More Environmentally Friendly Campus”. One group in particular worked on a restoration ecology project with a focus on evaluating the plant species on the campus grounds, and today’s planting ceremony is symbolic of the value of conserving our indigenous plant species.”

The plant and signage were kindly donated by the Biocultural Education and Research Programme of Barbados. Executive Director, Dr. Sonia Peter highlighted that among the benefits of the Frangipani is its
medicinal value.

“It is said that the flower has antibiotic properties and also it’s good for mental health if you are stressed,” she said. (TL)
