President of the Barbados Union of Teachers, Pedro Shepherd.

Teachers told to be professional

The Ministry of Education is calling on teachers to stop complaining.

President of the Barbados Union of Teachers (BUT) Pedro Shepherd relayed the message during the recently held 44th Annual General Conference (AGM) of the BUT at Almond Bay Conference Centre.

“Recently, I attended a meeting at the Ministry on the issue of violence and I was asked to use this opportunity at this conference to remind teachers to be more professional and to simply do their job as outlined in the Education Act and stop the complaining.

“I want to urge teachers to continue to display the highest level of professionalism as we continue to come under the microscope. Let’s be familiar with our duties as outlined in the said Act and its regulations so that the public has little to accuse us of,” he stressed.

Shepherd said that he always encouraged teachers to be professional in all that they do, pointing out that for the most part they have always acted professionally, but there is some
concern out there.

“Collectively we have a responsibility to our children,” the BUT President told the membership.

“I believe that we all need to work together in advancing the cause of education. No school can be managed by a principal alone or for that matter by teachers alone. Leadership and guidance are always critical to the effectiveness of any school or association.” (TL)
