Secondary students take part in the demonstrations set up by the students the University of the West Indies’ Faculty of Science and Technology at the Barbados Association of Guidance Counsellors’ National Career Showcase held at UWI yesterday. 

Students respond well to BAGC National Career Showcase

 

 
Secondary students from across the island were given a close-up view into future employment through the Barbados Association of Guidance Counsellors (BAGC) National Career Showcase, which was held at University of the West Indies’ (UWI) carpark yesterday.
 
In addition to representatives from the sponsors of the event and their departments, UWI, Ministry of Labour, Social and Human Resources Development, Central Bank of Barbados, Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic, Fund Access and the Maria Holder Memorial Trust Fund, there were demonstrations and props set-up by the Barbados Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation (BADMC).
 
Students were informed about the various local products such as the cassava, breadfruit and yams from the BADMC. Human Resources Officer at the BADMC, Taurean Roach also told The Barbados Advocate about the speciality items created by BADMC such as the cassava Great cake and breadfruit pork sausage while noting that his department has encouraged persons not only to buy local, but to also grow local.
 
Another captivating booth was that of the Royal Barbados Police Force, (RBPF) where there were members of the tactical response unit. Acting Sargeant Worrell explained that the students were intrigued by the various equipment used by his team. Some of the equipment included the tactical vest, bullet proof vest, shield and an enforcer or battering ram.
 
The Barbados Fire Service also attracted the attention of students as that organisation focused on educating the youth on safety as well as fire prevention. Fire Officer of the Fire Prevention Unit, Leisa Prescod said that they showed the students the responsibilities of the fire officer, the importance of installing fire alarms, the proper disposal of batteries as well as teaching them about best practices.
 
Their booth also displayed the fire equipment used such as the Jaws of Life and the uniform worn by fire fighter.
 
Other representatives also present were from the Confucius Institute, Faculty of Science and Technology, Barbados Archives, Ministry of Health (nursing and vector control), The Immigration Department, Barbados Vocational Training Board, entrepreneurs in barbering, funeral services, published authors, geomatic engineering, sound engineering and the car racing community. Students from The Lodge School, The St. Michael School, Frederick Smith Secondary School and St. Winifred’s School were present for the showcase.
