Students graduate from Sandals Hospitality Training Programme

School leavers interested in pursuing a career in hospitality are receiving a helping hand from Sandals Barbados.

As part of its drive to support the tourism industry, 12 students undertook the resort’s second Hospitality Training Programme to gain the skills necessary in hotel operations.

These include technical and soft skills in various areas of the hotel including; the Kitchen, Restaurant, Bars, Stewarding and Room Service, Concierge, Front Office, Housekeeping and Laundry, Resort Shop, Photo Shop and Resort Sales, Cost Control, Accounting, Storeroom Operations, Maintenance Engineering and Entertainment.

“Our aim is to ensure that we have prepared the Barbadian workforce for the Hospitality Industry: locally, regionally and internationally,” said Training and Development Manager Glaister Williams in the resort’s conference room during the graduation ceremony on Friday.

The programme, which is set to begin its third cohort on Monday, runs for 10 weeks, through which trainees work five-days per week on a shift system to allow them to get the full hotel experience. Those successfully completing the programme are entered into a database in Sandals’ Intranet, which is accessible to all resorts within Sandals Resorts International.

Williams further outlined, “The database will provide a pool to all resorts for selection of future employees. Participants who have successfully completed the Training Programme will be given a Sandals Certificate of Successful Completion and a letter of recommendation from the General Manager.”

Meanwhile, two of the most outstanding trainees were offered jobs at the resort.

“You must embody an attitude of Personal Mastery. This means that you must have a vision of where you want to go, yet, you also recognize the realities of where you are right now, but, you must then make a commitment to work towards that vision. And as you continue along that path, I would like to remind you to take pride in everything you do; which means that you must take personal responsibility in delivering excellence,” he advised.
